About SeaWays Advisory

Founded by industry icon, Capt. Arie Nygh AM, SeaWays Advisory is an Australian company established to provide quality training, assessment, auditing and consultancy services to the ports and shipping industry.
With a foundation in groundbreaking competency based tugmaster training utilising advanced marine simulation and onboard assessment initially in Australia and New Zealand, SeaWays has expanded its global footprint with sister companies delivering SeaWays accredited training internationally.
SeaWays original tugmaster training methodology has evolved into other sectors, including pilotboat operation, pilotage, barge and bespoke specialist small ship handling such as trailer suction dredgers, ferries, bunker vessels, white-boats and articulated tug & barge, with a focus on safe and efficient omni-directional thruster operational capability.
In addition to vessel operator sponsored and individual self-funded training courses, SeaWays now offers industry a broad range of worldwide marine consultancy services in their capacity as internationally recognised subject matter experts.

Our Training Philosophy

The competency based SeaWays Tugmasters Training Program© was originally modelled on the training delivered to RAAF fighter jet pilots. It starts with the very basics and builds progressively to the desired competency standard required to operate a tug solo.

Each step is explained and demonstrated by the SeaWays Training Master before the trainee takes control to practise and become proficient the particular step in the training process. The formalised and staged approach through progressively more difficult exercises ensures the trainee is never put into situations they have not developed the skills, knowledge and confidence to handle.

The SeaWays Tugmasters Training Program© is the only tugmaster training system in the industry that non-subjectively proves compliance & competency. SeaWays training is designed to be compliant to ISO 9001:2015, STCW-, ISM Code, Port Marine Safety Code, MCA Towage Endorsements and the only accredited tugmaster training in the world by ClassNK Classification Society.

It also provides independent proof of compliance and competence to third-party stakeholders such as harbourmasters, port authorities, pilot services regulators and insurers.

Arie Nygh’s philosophy stemmed from his own bad experience of poor training and feeling out of his depth. Rather than succumb, Arie developed an analytical approach to tug-handling and formulated a proficiency-based training — borrowed from his son’s Air Force training to fly F-18 jets.
Port Otago asked Arie to train four novices — three pilots and one GBO — to complete Module 1 Tug-Handling over a ten-day period. All four trainees showed great enthusiasm and commitment, which bodes well for a promising start.
Without a shadow of doubt, Arie’s visit has been of enormous benefit to the port. Arie also introduced the concept of the annual audit, which has been taken up by several ports in Australia. This is more than a formality: it is an ongoing and maturing process which provides resilience.
